Description :

83+ Year Old Red Guardian — Northern Chinese Document Chest with Certificate

This 83+ year old antique document chest originates from Northern China and dates to approximately the early 1940s. Crafted from soft wood, the box is coated in deep red lacquer, now visibly worn and faded—a testament to age and use. It stands atop a low black wooden base, which elevates the chest subtly while remaining visually understated.

The front panel features a traditional metal pull handle flanked by decorative brackets with a floral flourish, while the rear reveals aged, functional hinges. The surfaces show comprehensive patination: chipped paint, scratches, edge scuffs, and softened ornamental flourishes. These wear patterns align with an artifact that has lived through decades of domestic or ceremonial use.

A key feature is the side panel painting: a robed figure holding a staff beside a black cat, rendered in a folk-style brushwork. This image injects personality and cultural nuance, potentially referencing protective symbolism or allegorical storytelling. Floral scrollwork borders the lid and frame edges, worn but still readable through the rubbed lacquer. The full array of visible wear—along seams, corners, and the paint field—authenticates its history without compromising physical integrity.

Authentication & Provenance:

This piece is accompanied by an official:

· Certificate of Antique, issued by the Ning Po Art & Craft Merchants Association, China

· Item Identified: Softwood document box from Northern China

· Date of Certification: July 5, 2001

· Estimated Age at Certification: Sixty years

· Reference No.: 0196150 A

· Includes: Manager's signature, embossed red stamp, and affixed identification photograph

· Additional Annotation: Handwritten “Purchased Feb. 2002” at top of certificate

The certificate confirms the chest’s origin and age, substantiating its status as an antique. Its inclusion significantly enhances the collectible and curatorial value of the item.

Stylistic and Cultural Background:
Mid-20th century Chinese document chests often served practical or ritual roles in households or studios. The painting of a cat and guardian figure possibly symbolizes domestic protection, wisdom, or folklore, with interpretations rooted in regional tradition. The handmade quality and individually painted panel suggest limited production and unique craftsmanship.

Materials Made Of:

· Softwood structure

· Red lacquer paint with floral and figural detailing

· Metal handle and brackets

· Hinged lid with aged hardware

· Black painted wood stand

Condition Notes:
Authentic wear throughout—including chipped corners, paint loss, faded lacquer, and surface scratches. Structure is intact and hinges functional. The patina and flaws collectively affirm its age and origin, reinforcing rather than diminishing its value.

Measurements:

15" W  x  19" H  X 9 1/2" D
