Description :
An Antique Collignon Folding Children's Rocking Chair An antique Collignon folding children's rocking chair, these chairs are recognized as
the first patented folding rocking chairs in the United States, invented by the
Collignon brothers in 1868History
and Rarity
The Collignon brothers, Nicholas, Claudius, and Adam, were
French immigrants who opened a furniture factory in New Jersey in the mid-19th
century. Nicholas conceptualized a folding rocker after observing that pioneers
in covered wagons had to tie their bulky rocking chairs to the outside of their
wagons. The resulting patented design, which folds into a compact shape, was a
highly successful space-saving solution. While
many of these chairs were mass-produced, surviving examples are considered
unique due to their historical significance as the first of their kind, with
some displayed in institutions like the Smithsonian Museum.
