The King and I – 1965 Booklet of Stage Heritage

Up for auction is an exceptional single booklet that captures a compelling slice of American theatrical history, featuring a rare Playbill from the Curran Theatre’s production of The King and I, presented during its 28th annual season under the leadership of Allen L. Chickering as President and Edwin Lester as General Director. The program’s cover showcases an intricate illustration of a traditional Thai temple, setting the tone for this beloved musical. Within its pages, the booklet includes cast and crew highlights from multiple productions, including a July 1965 issue of Playbill, Volume 2, Number 7, featuring influential articles such as “The New York Revolution” by Alan Solomon, “Advice to Young Actors” by Sir John Gielgud, and a thought-provoking “Theatre Talk” by Paul Steiner, along with essays and quizzes that explore themes like personal bias, notably by Bernice Peck. Further enriching its contents is a detailed program from a San Francisco Civic Light Opera staging of The King and I, showcasing a stellar cast including Ricardo Montalban, Florence Henderson, Jean Sanders, Don McKay, Michael Kermoyan, Takako Asakawa, Barry Robins, Lester Matthews, Tommy Smith, Ted Stanhope, and Joyce Bryant, produced and directed by Edwin Lester and Edward Greenberg. Preserved in good condition, this unified booklet offers collectors and theatre enthusiasts a multidimensional view of mid-century American stagecraft, spanning iconic performances, editorial insight, and historical artistry—making it a true treasure for anyone seeking a tangible link to Broadway’s and the West Coast’s golden legacy.
