Description :
Annie Get Your Gun (Rodgers & Hammerstein / Mary Martin Edition) This rare and authentic Playbill from the Rodgers &
Hammerstein-produced national tour of Annie Get Your Gun—featuring the
legendary Mary Martin in the title role—is a dazzling artifact of
postwar American musical theatre. The tour launched in 1947, following
the Broadway success of the show, and brought Irving Berlin’s timeless score
and Herbert & Dorothy Fields’ witty book to audiences across the country.
Martin’s portrayal of Annie Oakley was hailed for its warmth, humor, and vocal
brilliance, while Ray Middleton, reprising his original Broadway role as
Frank Butler, delivered a commanding and charismatic performance. The principal
cast also featured Ruth Kobart as Dolly Tate, Robert Halliday as
Buffalo Bill, William LeMassena as Charlie Davenport, and Betty Bruce
as Winnie Tate, with ensemble contributions from George Wallace, Dorothy
Greener, Jack DeLon, and Eleanor Knapp, among others. The production was directed by Joshua Logan, with scenic and
lighting design by the visionary Jo Mielziner, whose work defined
mid-century stage aesthetics. Choreography was originally created by Helen
Tamiris, with dances for the tour recreated by Daniel Nagrin,
preserving the kinetic spirit of the Wild West ballet sequences. Costumes were
designed by Lucinda Ballard, adding period flair and rugged elegance to
the cast’s frontier look. Musical direction was helmed by Ray M. Kavanaugh,
who conducted the orchestra with precision and energy. The tour was produced by
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, whose stewardship ensured the
show’s artistic integrity and national reach. Behind the scenes, the production
was supported by a team of seasoned professionals including Miriam Blue
(casting), Eleanor Harris and James L. Kennedy (press), and Theatre
Arts Promotions, Inc. (advertising). This Playbill, printed in crisp monochrome ink and bound in classic
saddle-stitch format, features a bold Western-themed cover illustration that
captures the spirit of Annie’s sharpshooting charm and the show’s rollicking
Americana. It is not a reproduction, but a genuine production-issued artifact
from the original Rodgers & Hammerstein tour—an essential acquisition for
collectors of musical theatre ephemera, Mary Martin devotees, and historians of
Broadway’s golden age. Measurements: Annie
