Description :
MGM Promotional Set – Huckleberry Finn (1960 CinemaScope Film) This authentic three-part promotional exhibit from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s 1960 CinemaScope production of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn showcases the full artistic and technical ensemble behind this faithful adaptation of Mark Twain’s 1884 novel. Starring Eddie Hodges in the titular role as Huck Finn, and Archie Moore as Jim, the film’s casting balanced fresh talent with beloved screen veterans. The featured ensemble includes Tony Randall, Patty McCormack, Neville Brand, Mickey Shaughnessy, Judy Canova, Andy Devine, Sherry Jackson, Finlay Currie, Josephine Hutchinson, and iconic silent-era legend Buster Keaton, enhancing the production’s prestige and historical continuity. The film was directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Curtiz, renowned for Casablanca, whose visual storytelling brought depth to Twain’s Southern landscapes. The screenplay was penned by James Lee, translating Twain’s vivid dialogue and episodic structure for the widescreen medium. The lush Americana score was composed and conducted by Jerome Moross, invoking the atmosphere of the Mississippi with cinematic grandeur. Photography was led by Ted McCord, A.S.C., whose mastery of composition and light delivered striking visuals, rendered in Panavision® lenses and processed via Metrocolor, MGM’s proprietary system for vibrant color presentation. Art direction was helmed by George W. Davis and McClure Capps, with set decoration by Henry Grace and Robert Priestley, framing the film’s period details with authentic textures. The production’s visual effects were executed by A. Arnold Gillespie, and editing was completed by Fredric Steinkamp, ensuring narrative clarity and rhythm. L. V. McCardle Jr. served as assistant director, while Franklin Milton oversaw recording as supervisor. Color consultancy contributions came from Charles K. Hagedon and Mary Wills, enriching the palette and presentation of each frame. Further creative talents included Jack Martell for men’s costuming and William Tuttle, MGM’s legendary makeup artist, who helped define the visual character of each role. The film's design integrity is bolstered by contributions from William Ferrari and Hugh Hunt (credited in the earlier panel), with promotional layout reflecting iconic steamboat illustrations and CinemaScope stylization. This set is a studio-issued exhibition artifact, not a reproduction, featuring rich monochrome printing, meticulous typesetting, and saddle-stitch binding. Ideal for collectors of American film history, lovers of Mark Twain adaptations, and archivists of MGM’s golden era, this piece captures a full spectrum of behind-the-scenes artistry rarely preserved so completely.
