Description :
Original 1946 Curran Theatre Playbill & Program – Oklahoma (Theatre Guild) This rare and authentic program
cover and accompanying playbill from the Theatre Guild National Company’s 1946
Curran Theatre production of Oklahoma—a landmark American musical by Richard
Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II—offers a vivid snapshot of post-war Broadway
on tour. It opened on Thursday, February 7, 1946, under the direction of Rouben
Mamoulian, with original dances by Agnes de Mille and production supervision by
Theresa Helburn and Lawrence Langner, reproduced by Jerome Whyte. Scenic design
by Lemuel Ayers was executed by George Jenkins, costumes were executed by
Mildred Anninger, and lighting was handled by Feder. Musical leadership came from
Jay Blackton (general musical director and orchestra conductor), with
orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett, dance-music arrangements by Genevieve
Pitot, and additional musical arrangements by Trude Rittmann—all overseen by
the show’s creators Rodgers and Hammerstein. The cast, listed in order of
appearance, includes Mary Marlo (Aunt Eller), James Alexander (Curley McLain),
Mary Hatcher (Laurey Williams), Al Webster (Ike Skidmore), Brent Flenniken
(Fred; alternate Curley), Victor Young (Slim), Walter Donahue (Will Parker),
Richard H. Gordon (Jud Fry), Dorothea MacFarland (Ado Annie Carnes), David
Morris (Ali Hakim), Dorothy Upchurch (Gertie Cummings), Gemze de Lappe (Ellen),
Davie Gladstone (Kate), Louise Fornaca (Sylvie), Betsy Ross (Armina), Margaret
Nelson (Aggie), Dave Mallen (Andrew Carnes), Eugene Keith (Cord Elam), Robert
Early (Jess), Erik Kirsten (Chalmers), Jerry Clayton (Mike), Edwin Ziegler
(Joe), and Alfred Cibelli Jr. (Sam), with Suzanne Lloyd as alternate Laurey. Printed in vibrant color on the program cover
and in black-and-white on the playbill, both bound in the classic saddle-stitch
format, these pieces are unaltered originals from the original run—an
indispensable set for collectors of Broadway ephemera, devotees of Rodgers
& Hammerstein, and historians of mid-century American musical theatre. Measurements: Booklet: Length: 12 Inches; Width: 9 Inches; Playbill Program: Length: 13 Inches; Width: 6 Inches; Shipping Available: See “Learn
