Gilded Voices Of The American Theatrical Stages - Play Bill Inserts

This remarkable collection of vintage Playbills offers a rare glimpse into four luminous theatrical landmarks from the golden era of touring Broadway. First, the Curran Theatre’s 1961 production of Gypsy shines with the brilliance of bookwriter Arthur Laurents, composer Jule Styne, and lyricist Stephen Sondheim—a trio whose musical alchemy defined mid-century American theatre. The cast, led by the captivating Julienne Marie, dynamic Alfred Sandor, and spirited Betty Bruce, infused the show with a vivacious energy, backed by a creative team whose talents lit every footlight.

At the Gerry Theatre, A Majority of One unfolded on June 5, 1961, under the deft direction of producer and visionary Dore Schary. Written by Leonard Spigelgass, this poignant exploration of cross-cultural understanding starred the beloved Gertrude Berg and esteemed Cedric Hardwicke. The ensemble, including Berta Gersten and Maurice Ottinger, completed a cast whose performances resonated with audiences nationwide.

From the Alcazar’s historic boards, two cultural gems emerged: On April 5, 1960, The World of Carl Sandburg, adapted by master wordsmith Norman Corwin from the lyrical works of Carl Sandburg, enveloped audiences in poetry and philosophy through the powerful presence of Bette Davis and Gary Merrill, whose onstage synergy echoed their legendary screen pairing.

Finally, on October 7, 1958, Eve Arden brought elegance and wit to the role of Mame Dennis in Auntie Mame, adapted from the novel by Patrick Dennis. With direction by the celebrated Morton DaCosta, this touring production captured the irreverent charm and bold spirit of its heroine, punctuated by Arden’s indelible comic timing and heartfelt performance.

Together, these Playbill treasures offer a curated celebration of mid-century theatrical excellence, each bearing the signature of iconic actors, brilliant directors, and visionary playwrights. The collection invites collectors, historians, and lovers of live theatre to step into the footlights of history.
